NUNINGER, Laure

coprincipal investigator

Laure Nuninger's principal research relates to the analysis of the settlement in the long duration using statistical and geographical methods (spatial analysis and modeling) applied to archaeology. She studied in particular the evolution of the networks of habitat and their agrarian system to model the territorial dynamic during iron age and antiquity. Her work contributed to enrich the research protocols of the Archaeomedes program and continues beyond the Rhone valley by the coordination of the ArchaeDyn project "ACI Spaces and Territories" involving French and Slovenian researchers. She also takes part in the steering committees of two french networks: Spatial Information and Archaeology (ISA) and Modeling of Spatial Dynamic (MoDyS, interdisciplinary network supported by CNRS).

OŠTIR, Krištof

coprincipal investigator

Krištof Oštir's main research fields are optical and radar remote sensing and image processing. In particular he has performed research in radar interferometry, digital elevation production, land use and land cover classification, post-processing and fuzzy classification. The applications of remote sensing range from hazard monitoring change detection, archaeological site analysis to paleo-environment and paleo-relief modelling. He is author of a number of papers on remote sensing, geographical information systems and computer engineering, and is a reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

FOVET, Elise

Élise Fovet is Ph.D. student in archaeology under the co-supervision of K. Oštir and F. Favory. She’s studying the evolution of the settlement pattern during antiquity in eastern Languedoc (south-eastern France). Her work focuses on the analysis of the position of archaeological remains regarding the landscape (communication network and environmental resources – notably agronomical resources). She uses remote sensing techniques (satellite imagery and aerial photography) and digital elevation model (DEM) to produce convenient geographical database in order to relate it to archaeological data. She is participating to the ArchaeDyn project, taking part in two of the three workgroups of this project: one as a participant and one as a coordinator.

BRIGAND, Robin

Robin Brigand is Ph.D student in archaeology under the co-supervision of F. Favory (University of Franche-Comté, France) and G. Rosada (University of Padoue, Italy). He study the evolution of agrarian landscape in the Venetian plain (Italy) on the long term. Using geographical methods – more accurately agrarian morphology methods – his work is integrated into the geomorphological data in order to highlights the prevalence of the irrigation networks to control the hydrous flows, by irrigation or draining, during the Antiquity, Middle Ages and Modern Ages. He uses traditional documentation for landscape archaeology : remote sensing techniques (aerial photography and sattelite imagery), old cartography and digital elevation model.

TOLLE, Florian

Florian Tolle’s research fields range from landscape analysis to the modelling of spatiotemporal processes. He is concentrating his work on landscape indices as descriptors of past and present environment and the way it influences human activity. In this framework, issues of scale are more specifically addressed as the evaluation of optimal scale levels is a prerequisite to consistent results involving both point (settlements, archaeological features) and surface (landscape composition and configuration) data. After a CNRS post-doc working on the Archaedyn project, Florian is now a geographer at the University of Franche-Comté.

ŠPRAJC, Ivan

Sprajc's interests have been focused on Mesoamerican archaeology and archaeoastronomy. He has accomplished extensive research on the concepts about the planet Venus in the Mesoamerican world view, and on the practical and ritual significance of astronomical orientations in prehispanic architecture. During six field seasons of archaeological reconnaissance he directed in the southern part of the Mexican federal state of Campeche, i. e. in the central parts of the Yucatan peninsula, a number of formerly unknown archaeological sites were found, including major centers of ancient regional political organization.

ZAKŠEK, Klemen

Klemen Zakšek's research field consists of GIS, geodesy, remote sensing, modelling, and spatial analyses. He participates in a number of the institute's and other projects in the area of spatial analyses. He was an active member of the Proteus project about ancient paths modelling. He took part in the modelling of the Slovenian relief. He was also developing a filter of LIDAR data for the DTM generation. His most successful work and publications are conetced to solar radiation modelling. Natural processes modelling will also be an important part of his research agenda in the future.

VELJANOVSKI, Tatjana

Her primary field of interest is remote sensing data analysis and research (optical satellite images). The analysis of landscape changes in time is a main focus of her recent work. Her Ph.D. field of interest is oriented towards comparison of images taken at different times. Thus, her field of action involves techniques for image processing (radiometric corrections, image registration), image interpretation (change detection), and techniques for the determination (measurements) of types, sizes and trends of surface changes. During 2002-2004 she actively participated in the European AQUADAPT project; she was a coordinator of the Slovenian team in WP2, paying particular attention to the analysis of contemporary drinking water uses/users in southwestern Slovenia.
